By The Cat is a creative studio in Melbourne’s west, specialising in branding and website design. Some of our recent projects have included a brand identity for a fun non-alcoholic beverage store, and branded apparel designs for a healthcare organisation wanting to get their campaign heard across Victoria.

We exist because we’re in love with the idea that creating the right strategy can help your audience finally connect to your enterprise, organisation or product. And because the right branding strategy can change the trajectory of your business, we've found ways of making it possible to make it happen for you.

We established By The Cat Studio with the vision that our brand projects will always be beautiful and practical, and that we would take delight in finding ways to include exquisite details that entice a feeling of special connection with each brand. To ensure that we meet these standards, all of our work is held up to our three core values: clarity, character and consistency.

The essence of great communication. We aim for legibility and relevance in our designs. We also provide best practices documentation with every brand we help to create so that the brand grows stronger over time.

Bringing out or introducing character helps to keep most elements of a brand simple and easy to manage. Within our studio this can mean enhancing the look with certain characteristics, or it could mean creating a mascot. Adding character also works to draw attention to the brand’s desired focal points.

Repetition builds recognition. Repetition builds trust. Consistency can be conveyed through messaging, and it can also be conveyed through shape and colour. In fact, using the same shapes and colours in creative ways across your brand creates a bigger visual impact.

About two years ago, we made a jump and moved ourselves from the beautiful Tasmania/lutruwita over to boonwurrung country in Melbourne’s western suburbs. We are lucky enough to have a love of visual production in common. Through curiosity and delight, we have grown our skill set to be able to produce quality visuals for brands.

Janelle (she/her) is a Graphic Designer who specialises in digital and print branding. She likes to stay in the know about the digital aspects of business, and you can usually find her immersed in business branding and digital business tutorials or updating her skill set. When she does finally slow down, she designs new t-shirts and spends quality time with family and friends, and taking the kids on mini-adventures.

Elliot (he/they) is an Illustrator, specialising in digital character illustration. Though young, they are proficient with illustration, starting their journey by completing a series of two hundred and eighty-eight daily character illustrations. They are now a regularly commissioned digital artist and creates animated music memes for their YouTube channel.

Our youngest member of the studio, Mister A, is the world’s best cheerleader and a funny guy. He pops up regularly on live streams and invites himself along to Zoom meetings, so you can expect a friendly hello if you see him.

Finally, Comic is our resident feline and studio mascot. He spends his days asking for snacks and snuggles, playing with the baubles hanging from his cat mobile and making the studio a happy place. Once upon a time, he really struggled with allergies but after a lot of experimentation with suitable foods and a great amount of care, he is his best soft and floofy self.
